Tuning Techniques
Machine Edge
Machine edge tuning is a precision process that restores your ski or snowboard edges to the manufacturer’s recommended angle using calibrated equipment. This ensures consistent edge geometry across the entire length of the ski or board, improving control, grip, and responsiveness on snow.
Our technicians can also adjust the edge angle based on your riding style based on whether you need sharper edges for aggressive carving or softer angles for a more forgiving feel. If an edge angle isn't specified we will use the factory recommended angle. Machine tuning delivers a clean, burr-free finish that enhances edge hold and reduces chatter, especially on hardpack and icy terrain.
Benefits of Ski/Snowboard Edge Tuning
Improved edge hold on firm or icy snow
Consistent turning response across both skis or board edges
Customizable edge angles for different skill levels and terrain
Reduced fatigue from smoother edge engagement
Professional-grade finish with no guesswork or hand-tool variability
How We Tune Your Edges
Inspection & Prep: We assess edge wear and prep the base for clean contact.
Angle Calibration: Edges are set to factory specs or customized for performance needs.
Machine Sharpening: Our equipment delivers consistent, burr-free edges and base across the full length.
Detune Rockers: Rockers of ski or snowboard are detuned for smoother transition and better edge hold.
Finish & Polish: Final polish ensures smooth transitions and reliable grip. This includes deburring, rust removal, smoothing of knicks, and removal of pitting.
Machine Wax
Machine waxing is a fast and efficient way to apply glide wax to your ski or snowboard base using heated rollers and industrial nylon brushes. The process lays down a smooth, even coat of wax and buffs it to a polished finish, helping reduce friction and improve glide performance across varied snow conditions.
While machine wax doesn’t penetrate the base as deeply as a traditional hot wax, it’s a great option for one to two outings and offers faster turnaround. Running your gear through the machine multiple times ensures ample wax coverage and a consistent finish. This service is ideal for riders looking for a quick wax before heading to the hill.
Benefits of Machine Waxing
Quick turnaround and perfect for last-minute trips
Smooth, consistent glide across varied snow conditions
Budget-friendly option for casual or weekend riders
No scraping required—just wax, buff, and ride
Ideal for short-term performance (1-2 days on the hill)
How We Apply Machine Wax
Base Prep: We clean the base to remove dirt and old wax for better adhesion.
Wax Application: Heated rollers apply a thin, even layer of glide wax across the base.
Buffing Passes: Industrial nylon brushes polish the wax for a smooth, friction-reducing finish.
Optional Re-Runs: We may run your gear through the machine multiple times to ensure full coverage.
Hot/Summer Wax
Hot waxing is a deep-conditioning treatment that delivers long-lasting glide and durability. We start by cleaning the base to remove dirt and old wax, then apply fresh wax with a tuning iron to open the pores and allow deep absorption. The wax cures overnight before being hand-scraped and polished with coarse and fine brushes for a smooth finish.
Hot wax penetrates deeper than machine wax, making it ideal for extended use. If no temperature-specific wax is requested, we apply a universal option suitable for most conditions.
Benefits of Hot Waxing
Longer-lasting glide than machine waxing
Deeper wax absorption for better durability
Improved speed and control across all snow types
Universal or temperature-specific wax options
Hand-finished for optimal smoothness
How We Apply Hot Wax
Base Cleanse: Removes dirt and old wax for better absorption.
Wax Application: Wax is melted into the base using a tuning iron.
Wax Curing: Wax hardens into the base for deep penetration. This process takes 3 hours minimum but it's recommended for the wax to cure overnight.
Hand Scrape: Excess wax is removed for a clean finish. If your equipment receives a summer wax, the wax won't be scraped until the season starts.
Buff & Polish: Brushed with coarse and fine tools for smooth glide.
Phantom Glide Wax
Say goodbye to constant waxing. Phantom Glide is a permanent base treatment that delivers ultra-smooth glide in all snow conditions with no re-waxing required. It’s eco-friendly, PFAS-free, and engineered to bond deep into your ski or snowboard base using UV light. Once cured, Phantom lasts the life of your gear.
Benefits of Phantom Glide Wax
Consistent speed across all snow types
No temperature-specific wax needed
Zero maintenence after application
Environmentally safe and fluorocarbon-free
Application of Phantom Glide Wax
Base Prep: We clean your base for optimal absorption.
Phantom Wax Application: A thin layer of Phantom Glide Wax is evenly applied across the entire base.
UV Curing: Your gear is placed in our professional UV station for a full cure cycle.
Buff & Finish: We polish the base for smooth glide with no scraping needed.
Base Resurfacing
Base resurfacing restores the base of your ski or snowboard by removing the top layer with a coarse grit sanding belt. We follow with medium and fine grit passes for a smooth finish, then polish the base using a cork belt to prepare it for wax and edge work.
This process is essential for reconditioning worn bases and is included in our comprehensive and deluxe tunes. Because resurfacing removes a layer of the base, we always follow with hot wax and edge sharpening to restore full performance.
Benefits of Base Resurfacing
Restores damaged or oxidized base material
Creates a smooth surface for better wax absorption
Improves glide and consistency across snow conditions
Prepares gear for edge tuning and waxing
How We Perform Base Resurfacing
Edging: We sharpen edges to remove any imperfections and burrs from the ski or snowboards edge.
Coarse Sanding: Removes the top layer of the base using a Wintersteiger GRINDrite machine.
Smoothing Passes: Medium and fine grit belts refine the base finish.
Base Polish: Final polish prepares the base for wax and removes imperfections giving the base a smooth finish.
Hot Wax: We apply hot wax with a tuning iron and scrape the wax to complete the tune.
Base Structuring
Base structuring enhances glide by etching performance patterns into the base of your ski or snowboard. Using a high-performance dressing stone and touchscreen interface, we apply grooves tailored to your riding style and snow conditions—helping water molecules pass through the base for faster, smoother runs.
This premium service reconditions the base to factory-like performance and is only available through our deluxe tune, which includes base resurfacing, hot wax, and edge sharpening.
Benefits of Base Structuring
Improves glide by channeling water through the base
Custom structure patterns for snow type and riding style
Restores factory grooves worn down over time
Enhances speed and control in variable conditions
How We Perform Base Structuring
Edging: We sharpen edges to remove any imperfections and burrs from the ski or snowboards edge.
Base Prep: We expose fresh base material through belt resurfacing.
Pattern Selection: Touchscreen interface selects optimal structure for snow conditions.
Stone Structuring: Dressing stone etches grooves into the base.
Hot Wax: We apply hot wax with a tuning iron and scrape the wax to complete the tune.
Service Time
On average turnover time for services is 4 days; however, some services may take up to 10 days depending on what service needs to be done, the possibility of us having to order parts, and how many ongoing services we have
Plan ahead and bring your equipment in early so you don't have to worry about it not being done before your next trip to the hill
Disclaimers
Service work is completed in the order it is received
Service does not guarantee that there will not be future issues
We are not responsible for equipment left over 60 days
If service is left unpaid, your equipment won't be released to you
We can remove rust on edges to the best of our ability; however, if pitting occurs from severe rusting we may not be able to get all of the rust off
We have the right to turn away service if we don't have the capabilities to complete a certain service
It is the customers responsibility to check that the equipment is serviced to their liking before they leave the store (We won't reservice equipment for free after it's taken out of the store)
Tuning can't be done on the spot since most of our services require the wax to harden into the pores of the ski/snowboard which means the wax has to sit at least for a night. Also we may not have a service technician on staff at any given time.
It is the customers responsibility to make employees aware of how they want the edges on their equipment, otherwise we will set edge angles to the factory recommended setting
