Custom Shell & Liner Solutions

  • Expert ski boot shell modifications to lengthen or widen the toe box, relieving pressure and cramped toes in Oshkosh.

    Ingrown Toenail or Cramped Toes

    Front of Foot

When your boots are too short or narrow, your toes get squeezed against the front and sides of the shell. This pressure causes the skin around the nail to become raw, swollen, and prone to infection. This is commonly known as a painful "hot spot."

Solution: Lengthening and/or widening the toe box of the shell.

  • Targeted shell and zone molding to widen the ski boot and relieve little toe bunion pressure for Oshkosh area skiers.

    Bunion on the Little Toe

    Front of Foot

This pain is similar to a standard bunion but happens on the outside of your foot. It occurs when the base of your pinky toe sticks out and rubs against the side of the boot. This constant pressure leads to a painful, bony bump that makes the boot feel way too narrow.

Solution: Widening the shell in that specific area.

  • Targeted shell and zone molding to widen the ski boot and relieve big toe bunion pressure for Oshkosh area skiers.

    Bunion on the Big Toe

    Front of Foot

This happens when the joint at the base of your big toe sticks out and rubs against the inside of your boot. The constant friction between your foot and the hard shell irritates the skin and causes a painful, fluid-filled bump.

Solution: Widening of the shell in that area.

  • Targeted shell and zone molding to widen the ski boot and relieve pressure on painful swelling between the toes.

    Painful Swelling Between the Toes

    Front of Foot

This issue is usually caused by the big toe being pushed out of its natural position. When your toes are squeezed together, they rub against each other and the boot shell. This friction causes the area to become inflamed and fill with fluid, creating a painful, swollen spot.

Solution: Widening of the shell in that area.

  • Custom inner liner replacement to relieve top of foot pressure for local Oshkosh skiers at our shop.

Pain on the Top of the Foot

    Mid-Area of Foot

This occurs when the high part of your arch or the top of your foot rubs against the roof of the boot. This constant pressure can lead to a painful, fluid-filled bump or even cause inflammation in the tendons that run along the top of your foot.

Solution: Relieve pressure by adjusting the boot tongue or replacing the inner liner. Avoid altering the shell near the second buckle to maintain the structural integrity of the rivets.

  •
Targeted shell and zone molding to reshape the boot and relieve pressure on the inside of the ankle for Oshkosh skiers.

Pain on the Inside of the Ankle

    Mid-Area of Foot

Some people have a bony bump on the inner side of the foot known as the navicular bone. If you have flat feet, this bone can press and rub firmly against the hard side of your boot. This constant friction causes a painful, swollen bump to form.

Solution: Reshape the shell exactly where the swelling occurs.

  • Targeted shell and zone molding to reshape the boot and relieve pressure on the outer edge of the foot for Oshkosh skiers.

Pain on the Outer Edge of the Foot

    Mid-Area of Foot

This happens when the bony base of your pinky toe sticks out and rubs against the side of your boot. Whether it is due to your foot shape or how your foot sits in the boot, this extra friction leads to a painful, swollen bump along the outer midfoot.

Solution: Reshape the shell exactly where the swelling occurs.

  • Targeted shell and zone molding to reshape the back of the boot, relieving heel pressure for skiers in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Pain at the Back of the Heel

    Back of Foot

The area where your Achilles tendon meets your heel bone is very sensitive. If the back of your boot doesn't match the shape of your heel, it can pinch these tissues against the hard shell. This leads to painful swelling or inflammation in the tendon.

Solution: Reshape the back of the boot shell.

  • Targeted shell and zone molding to reshape the boot and relieve pressure on swollen ankle bones for skiers in Oshkosh.

    Swollen Ankle Bones

    Back of Foot

This occurs when your ankle bones rub against the hard inner walls of your boot. The friction is especially common on the inner ankle bone and causes the area to become inflamed, painful, and swollen.

Solution: Reshape the shell exactly where the swelling occurs.

Support & Alignment with Custom Footbeds

  • Custom Masterfit orthotics to relieve burning ball-of-foot pain for Oshkosh area skiers and snowboarders.

Burning Pain in the Ball of the Foot

    Front of Foot

When your feet are strained, you might naturally try to clench your toes to relieve pressure. If your foot is stuck in a cramped position, this doesn't work, and the soft tissue on the bottom of your foot gets compressed. This leads to a sharp, burning ache in the ball of the foot known as metatarsalgia.

Solution: Install a specialized footbed or orthotic sole to support the foot.

  • Custom Masterfit footbeds to correct alignment and improve balance for all foot types at our Oshkosh ski shop.

High Arches and Tight Insteps (Supinated)

    Foot Deviations

If you have high arches, your feet are likely stiff and struggle to absorb shock. This shape often makes the top of the boot feel way too tight over your instep. Because a high-arched foot doesn't flex easily, it is hard to stay balanced or move naturally when navigating different types of snow and terrain. This also causes most of your weight to crash down on just your heel and the ball of your foot.

Solution: Use a custom footbed to support your arch and evenly distribute your weight across the entire foot.

  • Custom Masterfit footbeds to correct alignment and improve balance for all foot types at our Oshkosh ski shop.

Flat Feet and Inner Ankle Pain (Pronated)

    Foot Deviations

This is the most common foot shape issue, where the arch collapses and causes the foot to widen. Because the foot rolls inward, your weight shifts onto the middle of your foot and puts intense pressure on your inner ankle bone. This often leads to sharp pain and "hot spots" where your ankle bone grinds against the hard boot shell.

Solution: Reposition the foot using a custom footbed to restore the arch, and customize the boot shell to create extra space for the ankle.

  • Custom Masterfit footbeds to correct alignment and improve balance for all foot types at our Oshkosh ski shop.

    Normal Foot (Neutral)

    Foot Deviations

Generally, a neutral foot fits most boots without major pain or obvious pressure points. However, without proper support, you might still feel like you're losing some control or "feel" for your skis, especially during long days on the slopes.

Solution: While a specific medical sole isn't required, a custom footbed can improve your overall balance and provide a much better connection between your feet and your skis.

  • Custom Masterfit footbeds and shell molding to support collapsed arches and relieve ankle pressure in Oshkosh.

Flat Feet and Instability (Flat Arch)

    Foot Deviations

When your arches collapse, it weakens the muscles and ligaments in your feet, making them feel unstable and less able to absorb shock. A flat foot is often very flexible and rolls inward, which shifts all your weight and pressure to the inside of the foot. This makes it difficult to feel balanced or maintain control while skiing.

Solution: Use a custom footbed to support the arch and improve your "feel" for the snow. If needed, the boot shell can be reshaped to create extra room around the inner ankle and navicular bone to relieve stress.

  • Expert boot cuff alignment and sole shimming to correct knee tracking for skiers in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

    Bow-Legged Stance (Varus Knees)

    Knee Deviations

This is common when your legs arch outward, pushing your knees toward the outside of your boots. When your knees are out of alignment, your skis won't sit flat on the snow, making it difficult to turn or control your edges as they were designed to. This issue is more common for men.

Solution: Adjust the boot cuff alignment, plane the soles, or add shims under the boot lifters. Any sole modifications must ensure the boot remains safe and compatible with standard binding regulations (ISO 5355).

  • Expert boot cuff alignment and sole shimming to correct knee tracking for skiers in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

    Knock-Knees (Valgus Knees)

    Knee Deviations

This occurs when the knees collapse inward toward each other. When your knees lean in like this, your skis won't sit flat on the snow, making it hard to track straight or engage your edges properly. This often prevents the skis from performing the way they were designed. This is more common for women.

Solution: Align the boot cuff, plane the soles, or add shims under the boot lifters. We ensure all sole modifications keep the boot safe and compliant with standard binding regulations (ISO 5355).
